How it works
Your current grade already counts for the part of the class that is not the final exam. The calculator subtracts that earned portion from your target grade, then divides what is left by the final exam weight.
The formula is: required final score = (target grade - current grade × non-final weight) ÷ final exam weight.
Worked example
If your current grade is 85 percent, your target grade is 90 percent, and your final exam weight is 20 percent:
(90 - 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 110.0 percent
That means you would need 110.0 percent on the final, which is impossible in most classes, so you would need to lower the target or ask about extra credit.
Understanding your result
The result area uses three progress bars to make the calculation easier to read.
Bar 1 — Your current grade (teal): Shows what you've already earned. The longer this bar, the less you need to worry about the final.
Bar 2 — What you need (colored by difficulty): This bar changes color based on how hard you'll need to work:
- Green (0-50%): You just need a passing grade — relax.
- Blue (50-70%): A solid effort will get you there.
- Amber (70-85%): Time to study — but it's very doable.
- Orange (85-100%): You'll need a strong performance.
- Red (>100%): Mathematically impossible — adjust your target grade.
Bar 3 — Your target (dashed line): A reference marker showing where you want to end up. Compare it to your current grade to see the gap.
