Final exam planning

Final Grade Calculator

Find out what you need to score on your final exam

Calculate your required final score

Enter percentages only. Your result appears after a valid calculation.

How it works

Your current grade already counts for the part of the class that is not the final exam. The calculator subtracts that earned portion from your target grade, then divides what is left by the final exam weight.

The formula is: required final score = (target grade - current grade × non-final weight) ÷ final exam weight.

Worked example

If your current grade is 85 percent, your target grade is 90 percent, and your final exam weight is 20 percent:

(90 - 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 110.0 percent

That means you would need 110.0 percent on the final, which is impossible in most classes, so you would need to lower the target or ask about extra credit.

Understanding your result

The result area uses three progress bars to make the calculation easier to read.

Bar 1 — Your current grade (teal): Shows what you've already earned. The longer this bar, the less you need to worry about the final.

Bar 2 — What you need (colored by difficulty): This bar changes color based on how hard you'll need to work:

  • Green (0-50%): You just need a passing grade — relax.
  • Blue (50-70%): A solid effort will get you there.
  • Amber (70-85%): Time to study — but it's very doable.
  • Orange (85-100%): You'll need a strong performance.
  • Red (>100%): Mathematically impossible — adjust your target grade.

Bar 3 — Your target (dashed line): A reference marker showing where you want to end up. Compare it to your current grade to see the gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the final grade calculator work?

The calculator uses your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight. It finds how much of your target grade is not already covered by your current grade, then divides the remaining amount by the final exam weight.

What if my final exam is worth 0 percent of my grade?

Then your current grade is already your final grade — no calculation needed.

What if the result is above 100 percent?

It means your target is mathematically impossible with your current grade and final weight; consider lowering your target or asking about extra credit.

Can I use this calculator for any class?

Yes, as long as you know your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight as percentages.

What if my class uses a point system instead of percentages?

Check the explanation section or convert points to percentages first.

What do the colored bars mean in the result?

The three bars show your current grade (teal), what you need on the final (colored by difficulty from green=easy to red=impossible), and your target grade (dashed line). The final bar's color tells you at a glance how much work is ahead.

Can I share my result with friends or classmates?

Yes. Click the 'Share your result' button after calculating. You can copy the image to your clipboard or download it as a PNG file. The share card includes your scores and a visual snapshot — perfect for texting friends or posting online.

What does it mean when the result says 'Impossible'?

It means your target grade is mathematically out of reach with your current grade and final exam weight. For example, if you have 85% now, want 90%, and your final is worth 20%, you'd need 110% — impossible. Try lowering your target or asking your teacher about extra credit.
